Communication

Leadership

A solid plan will also allow engineering leadership to deal with unexpected challenges effectively, and ensure that the team is working towards long-term objectives.

Finally, the engineering leadership should be able to coach and mentor their teams. This includes helping new employees understand their responsibilities and encouraging existing staff members to share their knowledge among their peers. It’s a classic case of, “Give a man a fishing rod and you can feed them for a day. Teach him to fish and you can feed them for a lifetime.”

Engineering leadership includes knowing which management styles are most appropriate for different situations. Transactional leadership, which focuses on setting forthright expectations and establishing a system of rewards and sanctions, may be appropriate in some settings, but it is less effective when trying to promote innovation or foster employee growth.
